PAN 2.0 announced: Will your old PAN still work and how to get the QR-enabled card?

The government has launched PAN 2.0, a modernised version of the Permanent Account Number (PAN) system. This is aimed at transforming taxpayer services in India.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the initiative on November 25, allocating ₹1,435 crore to revamp the PAN/TAN ecosystem.

With advanced technology, eco-friendly practices, and enhanced security, PAN 2.0 promises to streamline tax processes for individuals and businesses alike.

Here's everything you need to know.

What is PAN 2.0?

PAN 2.0 is a comprehensive overhaul of the existing PAN system, integrating PAN, TAN, and TIN into a single platform.

This initiative aligns with the government’s Digital India programme, focusing on efficiency, speed, and accuracy.

The system introduces:

    • A centralised portal for PAN-related services.
    • Paperless processes for faster approvals.
    • Advanced cybersecurity measures to protect taxpayer data.

The aim is to reduce administrative hurdles while ensuring a digital experience for taxpayers.

What are the benefits of PAN 2.0?

The new system brings several key benefits to taxpayers:

    • Applications and updates will be processed quicker, reducing waiting times.
    • A unified database ensures consistency and reduces errors in taxpayer information.
    • Existing PAN holders can upgrade their cards at no additional cost.
    • Digital processes eliminate the need for paperwork, promoting sustainability.
    • The platform uses robust technology to safeguard sensitive taxpayer data.

Additionally, grievance redressal mechanisms will be more efficient, ensuring quick resolution of taxpayer queries.

While the existing PAN/TAN system has been functional for years, it lacks the technological advancements required for modern tax administration, an official statement said.

Do you need to apply for a new PAN card?

No, existing PAN cards remain valid.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified that taxpayers do not need to apply for a new PAN number.

However, they will have the option to upgrade for the PAN 2.0 card.

The new card will come with enhanced features, including a QR code for faster and more secure processing.

As clarified by Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the upgradation process will incur no additional cost.
